Rob Mumford was born and brought-up in Gloucestershire, the son of two Secondary School teachers. His childhood was a time of suffering in paradise: The house was large and the garden long, but these were shared with his older brother David.
Rob’s privileged middle-class world was funded by inheritance. His maternal grandparents were GPs who, when they died, left the majority of their wealth - a large house in the Cotswolds, a second home in Fowey, and an attractive investment portfolio - to Rob’s mother. This made life rather easy, but not easy enough for his father who died when Rob was fourteen.
Rob’s first degree was in Engineering from Imperial College. From there  he went to Oxford to complete his PhD which involved “mucking around with lasers and white light”.
Rob still lives in Oxford and continues to work on developing lasers for industrial and medical use. Some of the work even borders on being secret.
He met Will in 2004 in the Eagle and Child (Will is the brother of Rob’s girlfriend at the time) and they have been friends on-and-off ever since. Will says that this is despite Rob being “intensely irritating”.
Rob wrote “That’s all I need” in 2009, and Will was the first to read it. A few months later it became “pageram”.
I hadn’t heard from Rob in nearly a year when he called me in August 2009. He’d got himself in to a right mess.
