Chapter 3 - Visitors

Thoughts of Helena made my walk to PC World almost enjoyable. Any feelings of enlightenment soon disappeared as I entered “the store of the living dead”. I usually avoid the place but I needed some way of downloading from the camera. Along with the manual, I’d also omitted to hide the cable and everything else that had come with it.

The man in the purple shirt had his head down reading an instruction booklet on the counter in front of him. He looked up, screwed his face in to a smile and said nothing. I was not going to speak first. We waited. He cracked.

“Can I help?”

I held out the camera.

“I need a cable or something to download from this.”

He did not go to take it.

“Is it yours?”

“Well, it is and it isn’t.”  

I could hear Danielle “Tut” with disgust. This was the type of answer that drove her mad.

“If it’s not yours then I don’t think I should.”

I had two choices: Leave the shop and confirm his suspicions, or indulge in a painful male-solidarity routine. I looked down at my flip-flops.

“It belongs to my ex-girlfriend.”

The momentary pause between “ex” and “girlfriend” was an opportunity for him to consider my overwhelming pain and sense of loss. While he did this, I thought of Helena and her invite. I would have to get some shoes before the party. He put out his hand and took the camera.

 

 

 

“Rob has strict rules about where you should and shouldn’t shop, and when you should and shouldn’t buy online . He adheres to them rigidly....as long as it is convenient.”
