“She left it behind…..I just want to get be able to look at the last pictures.”

“Are they of you and her?”

What did he mean?

“I can’t remember,” I said.

“You’d be better-off with a card-reader than a cable.”

He flipped open a little hatch on the camera body and withdrew a card.

“It’s an xD,” he said.

Great, he was starting to show off . He reached beneath the counter and produced a plastic pack containing a little white box.

“She might come back, you know, mate,” he said.

These words struck me square in the face. When I’d said “ex”, I’d not been thinking of Danielle – I was just talking bollocks to try to get him to help me. “Ex” was anonymous, whereas “she” was very personal. I shook my head.

“I doubt it.....mate.”

 

When I neared home, I went to the newsagent and bought a paper and some Rolos. The latter were wonderfully sweet. However, they were not good enough to distract me from what PC-man had said. What if Danielle did want to come back? Would I agree to it? I stepped in to the road. There was a screech of tyres on tarmac and I looked to my right. A silver Vauxhall Vectra was nose-down as it completed its emergency stop. I stepped back. It moved forward and turned left for the shops. The driver and passenger stared at me as they passed. I stared back. Wankers.

The phone was ringing as I opened the front door.

“Is that Robert Mumford?”  

The voice was unfamiliar. My breathing quickened. It might be him.

 

“Rob once told me that he doesn’t like talking to people that he thinks are less intelligent than him. He can be such a tit sometimes.”
