“You said that you didn’t have tea.”
“I said, I don’t drink it.”
He stared at me.
“Well, we do. Can I make some?”
“Yes.”
“Where are the tea bags?”
“Chimps advertised tea bags. You’ll find leaves in that tin.”
I nodded towards the shelf. I think my point was lost on him.
Skinner was waiting outside. I joined him. We went over to the gate and I started to explain.
“He came in here and –“
Skinner held his finger to his lips, mimed “Sshhh” and signalled to number three with his head.
“There’s no one in. I saw her going to work this morning,” I said.
He ignored me. Policemen don’t like to be told things. He moved to the flowerbeds, lifted his head and sniffed.
“Pwor.”
He was right. The light rainfall had moistened everything.
“It’s cats,” I said.
“I know.”
He walked over to the shed.
“What’s in here?”
“A mower, my bike. The usual.”
