“Hello,” he said.

“Hello.”

We smiled then shook hands. It was a meeting of relief for both of us.

“I’m Mark Croft. I’m a Surveillance Officer with Revenue and Customs. I think I’ve caused you a bit of a problem. I’m sorry.”

“Right,” I said, “I’m Rob, but you already know that.”

“Yeah. I hope we can sort this out. It’s a bit of a mess at the moment.”

He was right. Things were a mess. Danielle’s image came in to my mind. Things were a bloody mess.

“Look,” I said, “I know this is important for you, but it isn’t a brilliant time for me. If you could all go away just for a short while, it would be really good.”

Passmore shook his head and let out a small laugh. This guaranteed his departure.

“We need to talk to you now,” Skinner said.

“Well, it will have to wait. I want to be left alone.”

Skinner went to speak again. Mark stopped him.

“That’s no problem.” He looked at his watch. “Shall we say half-eleven? I can ring you. Is that OK?”

I nodded. Passmore looked around for an invisible ally. Mark began to usher them out.

“Can we ask you not to leave the house or make any calls?” Skinner said.

“Yes….you can ask.”

We moved to the front door. Skinner wanted the last word.

“An hour, that’s all,” he said.

“I’ll speak to you soon,” Mark said.

 

“Not the proudest moment in my professional life, but Rob made it a bit easier. He seemed quite upset. Now I know why.”
